The Ugly Duckling
The fairy tale ‘The Ugly Duck’ constitutes one of the many products of the ‘Classic Tales’ series, of ‘The Multimedia Factory’ company.
Each story consists of 16 illustrated screens, accompanied by narration and text. In each fairy tale two educational games are embedded. Depending on the program’s settings, Puzzles ‘breaks’ each illustration in a number of puzzle pieces. Sequencing reproduces the storyline’s pages in small icons, and the child is asked to order them in the chronological order that the story was unfolded.
The development of the product line ‘Classic Tales’ was held as part of the MAPS (Mental Attributes Profiling System) program research activity, run under the Cyprus Neuroscience and Technology Institute (CNTI). The program targeted the identification of the brain’s nonverbal skills as well as their development and measurement using educational multimedia.
This specific program develops the sequencing ability as well as auditory and visual memory. With aim the advancement of research, anonymous recording of the time taken for the choices to be made is also possible.
The program is available in formats compatible to almost all mobile and computer environments. The product was initially produced in 1994 and was mainly used by the CYBER KIDS computer chain schools as well as students of The Republic of Cyprus public schools. The product was also available mainly via the Greek-American communities in small numbers in USA’s market.
